Izip e3 compact2/19/2023 ![]() ![]() Simi’s feel is whimsical and beachy, but it offers a lot more technology and comfort than the old, sand cruiser in your garage. I was able to keep the front under control even with eight 12-ounce cans of lime seltzer and a bag of cookies weighing it down. Then I clamped a low-profile basket to the rack and a wicker one to the handlebar, and headed for the store. With 250 watt-hours of capacity, the battery is more than adequate-in the lowest assist setting, it extends ride range substantially in the highest, it can do a good amount of the work for you, but only for a limited time. Between 8 and 12 mph, I felt the most consistent assistance and smoothest ride. It had a subtle engagement, instead of making me feel like I was constantly accelerating like some e-bikes do. Ride ImpressionsĪlthough the motor isn’t the smoothest I’ve ever ridden, it’s pretty darn good for an e-bike at this price. Two-inch-wide rubber tires roll smoothly on pavement, but provide enough traction to keep you stable and planted through corners or small patches of sand at the pier. You can use them when you have a basket full of veggies and flowers from the farmers market because they are less touchy to engage than hydraulic disc brakes, and they allow for a more gradual stop. I kept my speed under control with the large, 180mm rotors of mechanical disc brakes on the heavy bike. The paddle shifting is simple and easy to use, and a window shows which gear you are in so you know exactly how many more cogs are left. The Shimano Tourney 1×7-speed drivetrain has a cassette range of 12- to 28-tooth cogs, which at first glance may seem small (it is), but the motor compensates by engaging harder when you run out of gears. The Simi has all the conveniences you need for commuting: Fenders, a rear rack, lights, and mounts for a water bottle cage keep you visible and dry, and allow you to haul your stuff. My sit bones were well supported by a wide, cushy saddle. You can mount a basket up front on the wide handlebar if you want to add more carrying capacity. It is useful when you are stopping or navigating crowded boardwalks where you have to put your foot down frequently. The seat tube is on a much slacker angle-allowing you to sit on the ground without getting off the saddle-while still maintaining a comfortable distance from the pedals. Simi’s upright position is easy on the lower back, neck, and wrists, and lets you enjoy the scenery as you pass. ![]() You cannot see things like current speed, battery level, or miles ridden, but you can get an idea of remaining range by checking the battery lights. There are buttons to power up the bike, control the lights, and select assist. Next to the left-hand grip is a simple, yet sufficient LED display unit from SR Suntour. Using the lowest assist setting, a fully charged battery will last up to 62 miles, and the highest setting about 15 miles. There are three levels of assistance: eco, standard, and high. Once I passed 15 mph, it took exponentially more torque to increase the motor assistance.Ī button on top of the SR Suntour battery lets you check its juice level while riding, and a threaded receptacle prevents the plug from accidentally slipping out while charging. Hub-driven SR Suntour E25 DC motor is a little touchy when engaging and disengaging, but smooths out once you get rolling. On the Simi, the motor takes much of the work out of the ride, so you can go farther without working as hard. The step-through frame and upright positioning make it comfortable to ride (even in a skirt! ), and fenders keep puddles from splashing onto your clothes. You can strap parcels, beach towels, or a rack-mounted basket to the rear carrier of the Simi. You won’t have to sweat as much on hot rides thanks to the pedal-assist motor. If you’re dreaming of boardwalk rides or a quick cruise down to the corner store, the Izip E3 Simi Step-Thru electric cruiser might be the right bike for you. ![]()
